3. What equipment do I need to buy? Each player needs to bring their own glove and fielding mask. Bats, helmets, and catcher's gear are supplied by the league, but you can certainly purchase your own.
4. What about uniforms? Each player needs to purchase their own softball pants. We recommend black for all teams. The league provides team jerseys and socks only.
5. How about cleats? While not required, they are recommended. Only rubber spiked cleats are allowed, metal spikes are not permitted at any Division.
6. How do I get involved with coaching, volunteering, or the Board? That's great that you want to get involved! During registration, there is space provided to indicate you'd like to coach or volunteer. If registration is closed, please email
[email protected]. To be considered for a Board position, please email
[email protected].
7. How do the league and coaches communicate with me during the season? The league uses TeamSnap, which is a sports team management app that allows the league and coaches to communicate with you on behalf of your players. Once teams are formed each season, an email will be sent out inviting you to TeamSnap. Using the app through FRGSL is free for you.
8. Can my player move up a Division?Yes, a player can move up to an older Division at the parent or guardian's written request. Please note that "playing up" is a decision that should be taken seriously, as it may lead to an increased risk of injury. Players cannot be move up within an active season, this must be done at the time of registration.
Coaching FAQs
1. What do I need to do?
There are a few things you need to know and should be aware of. We've broken down the responsibilities of being a rec coach
here.
2. What are the rules?
The rules vary by Division. FRGSL also plays in two different leagues, and while we are working to reconcile the rules between the leagues there are slight differences in the gameplay in the Minors (3-5) and Majors (6-8) Divisions. Before each game, we recommend going over the ground rules with the opposing coach and umpire. Click
here for more information about the rules in each Division.
3. Do I need to pay the umpires?
In the past, the league has issued payments to each coach before the season beings to cover the cost of umpire fees for home games. It was typically the head coach's responsibility to physically pay the umpire. However, we are working with our umpire coordinator and hope to change this for the 2025 Spring Season, to relieve the head coaches of this responsibility.
4. What do I do if the field isn't ready for my game?
Raritan Township preps the fields at Lenape and Mine Brook for all of our home games. If for some reason the field was not prepped, or the prep was ruined, then the coaches need to prep the field (rake and line as needed). All equipment needed for prepping the fields can be found in the small shed across from Field #14 at Lenape Park.

5. What if it rains?
There is a dedicated section for this on our page about being a rec coach. Click
here for what to do in the event of rain. As always, if lighting occurs, all activities should be cancelled.
